ePublishing TLS 1.1 Deprecation Notice

On October 28, 2016, ePublishing will discontinue support for Transport Layer Security version 1.1.

Why are we doing this?

TLS 1.1 contains security vulnerabilities that are addressed in TLS 1.2. We kept version 1.1 active to support users of Internet Explorer 10 and below. In early 2016, Microsoft announced it was no longer supporting those versions of IE.

What do I have to do?

  • Let your internal staff know, especially your customer service people, and give them information for users who ask questions about upgrading their browsers.
  • Consider adding a message on your site using one of your editorial content areas to also explain

If you wish, look at your Google Analytics to find what percentage of your users are using browsers that aren’t able to use TLS 1.2. The following browser versions use this more secure protocol.

  • Google Chrome version 30. (Current version is 52)
  • Google Android for phones Version 5. (Current version is 7)
  • Firefox version 27. (Current version is 49)
  • Internet Explorer 11 (Current version is 11)
  • Microsoft Edge 13 (Current version is 14)
  • Safari 7.9 (Current version is 10)

What does this mean to our site’s readers?

If people are using older browsers that can’t use the TLS 1.2 protocol, they will likely see a security warning making them aware of a problem.

The good news is that the percentage of users on browser versions that can’t handle this change is extremely small, impacting mostly IE users.

Increased security for our customers is always a top priority. If you have any questions, please send an email to [email protected].
